Please Help Us Choose Our Next Movie!

Hey Reader!

My wife Renny and I often get asked, at a panel or on a podcast, “What is it like working side by side with your partner?” We usually end up saying something like, “We don’t know any different,” because basically, we started our careers at pretty much the same time and just kept working together.

Our relationship, and eventually our marriage, was due in large part to the fact that we just enjoyed working together, creating stories, art, and movies. Watch our latest video here:

Married and business partners?! So trendy right now…

Turns out, running a business with your significant other is also a bit of a trend for our generation. Fun fact: we made friends early on with a couple named Jim and Sam, who were a singer-songwriter duo, and we were so inspired by the work they created that we actually snuck one of their songs into the soundtrack of our future film, Alien Country. The song “Pull Over Now” can be heard in the background after the fight. The song itself talks about the reality of getting into an argument, fight, or disagreement with your partner, and the additional responsibility you need to take for your side. Ultimately, that was a bit of the theme we explored with the movie.

Well, over the last few months, I’ve been searching internally and externally for the next big project. And the one that seems to be garnering the most attention is a story currently titled Significant Others. Renny and I spent a few hours yesterday working through the characters and plot, and one thing I can say right now is that it is going to dive deep into a lot of the lessons I’ve learned about becoming a better husband, father, and, frankly, being more self-aware.

Help Choose Our Next Film!

Please take a moment, if you can, to read the descriptions of the next three films I’ve been working on and cast your vote for the one that intrigues you the most. Not only do I want to make something that connects with you, and yes, I mean you, the person reading this right now, but I also want to involve you in every step of the process. And right now, this very first step is choosing what we work on together. It only takes a couple minutes to read the descriptions, or watch the video, and vote for your favorite.

The north star of everything I’m trying to create with my art right now is all about “creative wellness.” When I am at my best, physically, mentally, and emotionally, I feel the most capable of creating art. And a lot of that comes from having a healthy relationship with my partner, and a supportive social environment of friends and family. This new film will explore that in a brand new way.

And for the first time ever, I am releasing a personal behind-the-scenes look at what it took for Renny and me to put our hearts and souls into Alien Country. This video is fairly short, but it really explains what it was like working with my partner on one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve ever created. Check it out!

When Do You Film in a Studio vs on Location?

Hey Reader! It’s Renny again. We saw PROJECT HAIL MARY and thought it was brilliant and, of course, as I was ruminating on the hows of the movie, I couldn't help but feel justified and excited about the creative decisions Ryan Gosling and co had to make: Hello, practical puppet!? Of course, Rocky was practical! (We've done our time with lots of practical puppets on set and it's truly special to see these characters come to life.) Hey Reader! It’s Renny here. When I first started booking work regularly as an actress, I realized something pretty quickly: the producer had all the power on set. In fact, one of my first crew jobs was assisting an Oscar-winning producer on a feature film. That was the first time I said to myself, “I want to be a producer.” The only problem? I had no idea what that actually meant. Let’s be honest, “producer” can be a pretty loose term, and there are a lot of different kinds of producers out...
